My name is Wilson Douce. For the last 27 years, I have been involved in education. I began in my home country: in 1991, I graduated from the Normal School (Teachers’ Training School) in Foreign Language Instruction (English, Spanish, and French) and in my native language, Haitian Creole. Then, after receiving a certification and diploma (Bachelor’s) from the State University of Haiti in Foreign Language Instruction, I entered the Department of Linguistics, where I completed four years of coursework (a second Bachelor’s). In 1996, I entered Stony Brook University in New York, USA, and completed my MATESOL in 1998. In 2008, I returned for a second Master’s in Liberal Arts and an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Educational Computing. Later, I completed a third Master’s in Hispanic Language and Literature and attained an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership. Currently, I am enrolled in a doctoral research program in Applied Linguistics at Aston University, UK.
For seven years, I worked in Haiti as a successful EFL and Spanish teacher in seven different public and private high schools and, for one year, as a French literature teacher. I taught Haitian Creole in many international institutions, such as the United Peace Corps, United Nations, Organization of American States (OAS), Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, and many more. Moreover, for three years, I worked as an Assistant Director at a private religious school (Institution Emmanuel) and served as the Director of their evening literacy program. I worked as a Haitian Creole translation consultant for BOCES and New York State Education Department (NYSED) from 2000-2003. For the last twenty-two years, I have been teaching ESL/ENL in two different districts—Wyandanch and Huntington—in Long Island.

Introduction to Lekti Kreyòl
Throughout my years as a language professional, and especially as I taught Haitian Creole to United Peace Corps and United Nations volunteers, I recognized a gap in the availability of short texts and appropriate targeted language activities materials in all four language skills. This is when the idea for this book (Lekti Kreyòl) was born, an idea that has been in the making for at least twenty-seven years. In a notebook, I made some preliminary notes, notes which, later, in the early 90s, I entered into a computer. The book has a total of twenty-five texts, covering twenty-five different topics. Each chapter starts with a short text, followed by a mini dialogue and activities on writing, reading comprehension, and Haitian Creole sounds practice. The Student’s Book concludes with a five-language glossary that includes Haitian Creole, English, French, Spanish, and German. It has a corresponding Teacher’s Book, where you will find answer keys to the activities in the Student’s Book. To offer extended practice in all aspects of Haitian Creole, there are three Activity Books spread across three levels, for beginning, intermediate, and advanced Haitian Creole students to extensively practice the language. The set includes an Assessment Book that measures students’ degree of learning of the Student’s Book; this Assesssment Book is subdivided into five sections, with each section covering five chapters. At the completion of the entire program, a Haitian Creole learner is given a certificate of successful completion of this reading-based coursework. For individuals and institutions who are shifting from paper to online learning, there is good news. The entire program is available online. Individuals and institutions ranging from elementary, middle, and high schools, colleges, universities, and others can purchase both the hard copy and the online version of the Haitian Creole learning program. Je m’appelle Wilson Douce. Je suis impliqué dans l’éducation depuis 27 ans. J’ai commencé mes études dans mon pays d’origine et j’ai été diplômé de l’École Normale en 1991 en enseignement des langues étrangères (anglais, espagnol, français) et dans ma langue maternelle, le créole haïtien. Après avoir obtenu une certification et un diplôme (Diplôme de Premier Cycle Universitaire) à l’Université d’État d’Haïti en enseignement des langues étrangères, je suis entré au Département de Linguistique où j’ai suivi 4 ans de cours et obtenu un second diplôme de Premier Cycle Universitaire. Puis je suis entré à l’Université de Stony Brook à New York, aux États-Unis en 1996 et j’ai terminé ma maîtrise MATESOL en 1998. Je suis revenu à Stony Brook en 2008 pour une deuxième maîtrise en arts libéraux et un certificat d’études supérieures en informatique éducative. Plus tard, j’ai continué mes études pour terminer ma troisième maîtrise en langue et littérature hispaniques et passer un autre certificat d’études supérieures en leadership éducatif. Je suis actuellement inscrit à un programme de recherche doctorale en linguistique appliquée à l’Université d’Aston, au Royaume-Uni.
J’ai travaillé pendant 7 ans en Haïti en tant que professeur d’EFL et d’espagnol dans 7 lycées publics et privés différents et en tant que professeur de littérature française pendant 1 an. J’ai enseigné le créole haïtien dans de nombreuses institutions internationales telles que United Peace Corps, les Nations Unies, l’Organisation des États américains (OEA), la Croix-Rouge, Médecins sans Frontières et bien d’autres. J’ai également travaillé pendant 3 ans comme directeur adjoint d’une école religieuse privée (Institution Emmanuel) où j’étais également directeur du programme d’alphabétisation du soir. J’ai travaillé comme consultant en traduction en créole haïtien pour le BOCES et le Département de l’Éducation de l’État de New York (NYSED) de 2000 à 2003.Au cours des 22 dernières années, j’ai enseigné l’anglais comme seconde langue dans deux districts différents de Long Island (Wyandanch et Huntington).
Introduction à Lekti Kreyòl
Tout au long de mes années en tant que professionnel de la langue, alors que j’enseignais le créole haïtien aux volontaires de United Peace Corps et des Nations Unies, j’ai remarqué un cruel manque de textes cours et de matériels d’activités linguistiques ciblées appropriés aux quatre compétences linguistiques. C’est alors qu’est née cette idée du livre (Lekti Kreyòl); idée en gestation depuis au moins 27 ans. J’ai commencé le livre dans un cahier où les notes avaient heureusement été saisies dans un ordinateur au début des années 90. Le livre contient un total de 25 textes couvrant 25 sujets différents. Chaque chapitre commence par un texte court, suivi d’un mini dialogue et de diverses activités de compréhension de lecture, de pratique des sons du créole haïtien et d’activités d’écriture. Le livre de l’étudiant se termine par un glossaire en 5 langues comprenant respectivement le créole haïtien, l’anglais, le français, l’espagnol et l’allemand. Pour offrir une pratique étendue dans tous les aspects du créole haïtien, le livre de l’étudiant a un livre de l’enseignant correspondant avec les corrigés du livre de l’étudiant. Il existe également trois cahiers d’activités répartis sur trois niveaux pour que les étudiants en créole haïtien débutants, intermédiaires et avancés puissent pratiquer la langue de manière approfondie. L’ensemble comprend un livre d’évaluation qui mesure l’apprentissage du contenu linguistique du livre de l’étudiant. L’évaluation est subdivisée en cinq sections et chaque section couvre cinq chapitres. À la fin de l’ensemble du programme, un apprenant en créole haïtien reçoit un certificat de réussite de ce cours basé sur la lecture. Pour les personnes et les institutions qui délaissent le papier pour se lancer dans l’apprentissage en ligne, il y a de bonnes nouvelles. L’ensemble du programme est disponible en ligne. Mi nombre es Wilson Douce. He estado involucrado en la educación durante los últimos 27 años. Introducción a Lekti Kreyòl
A lo largo de mis años como profesional del idioma, especialmente cuando enseñaba criollo haitiano a voluntarios del United Peace Corps y de las Naciones Unidas, noté la falta de textos breves y de materiales de actividades específicas en las cuatro habilidades lingüísticas. Fue entonces cuando nació la idea del libro Lekti Kreyòl. La idea se ha estado gestando durante al menos 27 años.
